Aftercare Summary
What follows is a brief description of the aftercare. This is intended to supplement, not replace, the more complete information on the Infant Circumcision page.
- No bath for the first 4 days. You may sponge bathe him but avoid immersing in water and avoid wiping or washing the penis.
- For the first four days, at every diaper change put a small amount (size of loonie) of ointment onto the gauze and after spreading it out apply over the penis.
This protects the baby’s penis. If you run out of the ointment provided in our office, you may continue using Vaseline or any other Petrolatum ointment. - You may give your baby infant acetaminophen drops (0.5ml of 80 mg/ml solution) every 6 hours for a maximum of two doses. This should only be given if you feel the baby is uncomfortable.
- Over the first week or two after the circumcision there may be an accumulation of a white-yellow area on the glans of the penis or around the surgical wound. This is a normal part of the healing process. This is a form of a scab which will fall off on its own. Please do not attempt to remove it as it could lead to bleeding.
- It is normal to have bleeding post circumcision. The bleeding will decrease with each diaper change over the first 24 hours. By 24 hours, you might see at the most some spotting.
